What is the difference between the note and the author date form?
Notes and Bibliography puts the detail in a footnote and keeps the bibliography alphabetical. Author Date puts the year beside the author in the text and is the form used in the sciences and social sciences. Both are generated here, so you can switch without retyping the source.
Do I get the shortened note as well as the full one?
The preview shows the full note, which is what a first reference uses. For a second reference to the same source, Chicago asks for the shortened form, so the author and short title are shown separately and ready to copy.
Is the 17th edition the only Chicago variant supported?
The 17th edition is the default and the one departments are currently asking for. Turabian, which follows the same note system for student papers, is also available in the full style list. The citation engine runs from a style library bundled with the page, so it keeps working offline and your sources are never uploaded.
